When Fear Goes Viral: Rediscovering Hope Through Wisdom

The Hidden Power of Media and the Matrix of Fear

Today, humanity finds itself deeply entangled in a structure that could well be called a "matrix of fear and despair." Among the greatest achievements of our modern era—social media—stands out as both a marvel and a menace. On one hand, it’s a powerful tool that connects people across the globe, from Japan to Siberia, from the U.S. to East Asia. On the other, it’s become a fertile ground for widespread narratives and scenarios—many of which revolve around injecting fear and instilling hopelessness.

These fears are not random; they’re often strategically designed and delivered, affecting every age group and demographic. From children who are taught to fear nature, animals, or even cartoonish monsters, to youth who are anxious about economic instability or marriage, to middle-aged adults worrying about retirement, and the elderly fearing loneliness and being forgotten.

Women may battle fear of social injustice or betrayal; athletes, fear of injury or failure; researchers, fear of censorship or irrelevance. Global-scale fears—ranging from asteroid impacts and world wars to environmental collapse and economic threats—are constantly circulated in the media, intensifying collective anxiety.

Of course, environmental crises, social inequalities, and economic concerns are not entirely unfounded—they are real and present in many people’s lives. But the issue lies in how these problems are portrayed in the media and on social platforms—often exaggerated, overly frightening, or shown from a narrow perspective. This kind of portrayal can lead to mental paralysis or chronic hopelessness. What we truly need is awareness that comes with balance.

Collapse of Hope, or Its Rebirth from Darkness?

This growing cloud of fear and despair often robs people of the present moment. Instead of experiencing the beauty of life in the “now,” many become trapped in a cycle of regret over the past and anxiety about the future. At such times, turning to the teachings of Iranian-Islamic wisdom and our great mystics can be profoundly healing.

Jalaluddin Rumi emphasized that despair is a spiritual illness, and that divine mercy is limitless. He wrote:

“The prophets spoke: Despair is wrong to keep,
For God’s vast mercy runs forever deep.

From such a giver, boundless in His grace,
How can one turn away, or hope erase?

So take the hem of mercy in your hand,
And trust His wisdom, though you don’t yet understand.”

These teachings remind us that hope must never be lost. Had the prophets given up in times of hardship, the great world religions would never have taken root. Rumi reminds us again:

“For many trials first seemed harsh and tight,
Then opened wide and turned to ease and light.

When hope seems lost, new hopes are born anew,
And suns arise where darkness once just grew.

Even in the darkest moments, light and relief await. Take Japan, for example—once devastated by nuclear bombings, it could have sunk into despair. But instead, its people chose resilience. Through unity, hard work, and hope, they rebuilt their nation into a global leader in technology and innovation.

Today, Japan is not only known for its high-tech achievements but also for its strong moral values and social harmony. Had its people given in to hopelessness back then, this transformation wouldn’t have been possible. Their story proves that with faith and perseverance, even the deepest wounds can lead to greatness.

Living in the Now: A Message from Khayyam and the Call for Shared Humanity

The great thinker Omar Khayyam also pointed to the importance of focusing on the present, rather than being consumed by the past or paralyzed by the future. In his own timeless words:

“Do not dwell on yesterday—it’s gone.
Don’t worry ‘bout tomorrow—it’s not yet dawn.
Build not your hopes on what’s past or to be,
Embrace the now — live fully, wild and free.”

This is an honest, heartfelt invitation to live in the moment—a moment that, if cherished, can be a wellspring of joy, peace, and true fulfillment.

Let us hold in our hearts the dream of a united joy—a world where not just one country or one continent, but all people live in peace and hope. We, as human beings, are one body; and true happiness can only exist when no one is left to suffer in fear or despair. Imagine if, for just one week, all of humanity lived fully in the present—free from fear, rooted in now. The Earth would resonate with a powerful, positive vibration—reminding us all of the true meaning of life.

So, people of the world, awaken! Wear whatever you have, dance, laugh, and embrace life. Life is here—right now, in this very moment. This joy and freedom are not luxuries, but a human right. And how beautiful it would be if that right were shared equally by every soul on this planet.
