Tonsils: Functions, Symptoms, and Treatment of Adenoiditis

What are tonsils?

Tonsils are lymphoid tissues located inside and on either side of the back of the mouth (the area where the throat connects to the mouth). They include the palatine tonsils, tubal tonsils, the third tonsil, also known as the adenoid and lingual tonsils.

Where is the adenoid located?

The adenoid is a clump of tissue located behind the nasal cavity above the roof of the mouth.

The function of tonsils:

Tonsils exhibit a defensive reaction upon the entry of bacteria and become swollen, which is commonly referred to as pharyngitis.

Symptoms of the adenoiditis:

In this condition, the body may experience reactions depending on the level of infection.

These are common symptoms of an inflammation of the tonsils, including the adenoid:

  • Fever
  • Sore throat, especially when swallowing
  • Red and swollen tonsils with white or yellow spots
  • Headache
  • Ear or neck pain
  • Fatigue
  • Cough
  • Shivering or chills
  • Swelling
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Difficulty opening the mouth

The cause of the adenoiditis:

The cause of the adenoid inflammation is a type of infection and crystallized phlegm.

  • Excessive consumption of ice cream,
  • Excessive consumption of yogurt
  • Excessive consumption of products containing white sugar can contribute to it. 

The treatment for inflammation of the adenoid:

  1. Eliminating animal and dairy products (for 2 weeks to a month).
  2. Switching to a plant-based diet.
  3. Avoiding Prohibited foods.
  4. Avoiding cold temperament fruits.
  5. Consuming warm temperament foods in the evenings.
  6. Gargling with saltwater.
  7. Nasal drops (a mixture of mint juice and a teaspoon of honey, put 3 drops in the nose in three stages with a one-minute interval each time).

  9. Consuming honey syrup (in the morning, afternoon, and evening - taking it slowly, especially before bedtime and upon waking up - is important).
